Peter and the Wolf (Grades K-5)

Listen to the symphonic fairy tale of Peter and the Wolf and imagine your own!

In 1936, a composer named Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) wrote a symphonic fairy tale called Peter and the Wolf. Here are some activities:

  • Listen to this recording of Peter and the Wolf.
  • Can you hear the following instruments that represent the different characters?
    • Peter = violin
    • Grandpa = bassoon
    • Cat = clarinet
    • Duck = oboe
    • Bird = flute
    • Wolf = French horn
    • Hunters = timpani

Go outside and close your eyes. Listen to the animals you hear. What instruments would you use to represent those animals in your own symphonic fairy tale?
