The Aquarium (Grades K-5)

In this activity, a very special piece of music will take children on journey into an aquarium.

The “Aquarium” movement from Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” was composed more than 100 years ago. As you listen, can you envision the fish and other creatures moving through the water?

What You’ll Need

  • A scarf or long piece of ribbon
  • Art supplies, including paper and something to draw with

What You’ll Do

  • Hold the scarf or a ribbon. As you listen to the music, move the scarf or ribbon along with the song. Does the music move slowly, or quickly? How does it make you feel? Can you make your scarf or ribbon move like a sea creature?
  • Draw what you hear. Does the music sound dark, or bright? What mood or feeling does it give you? If you close your eyes as you listen, what pictures or images come to mind?
